Is there a secret to ripping cd's?   I get so far ( this time about 7,000 songs )

After that i basically lose the will to live, throw a tantrum and wipe out the lot vowing never to rip any more.

Don't rip aphabetically? Rip them as you want to listen to them...and once you have the lot done, rip as you buy.

It's worth the effort as long as you rip to a lossless format, cos you never have to do it again.....thorough backing up assumed!

It seemed a good idea at the time...but once the red mist lifted...it didn't.

Don't rip everything including the tracks you don't like. Keeping just for backups is really unnecessary.

Take your time about it, not an unbroken marathon session of ripping. Can be doing other things while it works as well.

And if it must be mp3 use the variable bit rate format - LAME codec set up correctly with software like Exact Audio Copy (complicated and accuracy focused) or CDex (convenience) is good - otherwise the same applies for FLAC.

Use batch tagging software and use the most hassle free approach - say files can be automatically named as *artist* - *track* when ripped and tagged with artist, album and whatever else you need that applies to multiple files, or just organised later in media player playlists.

I'm with PJ - I rip as I want to listen, and then maybe once that album is playing, get five or so off the shelf and rip while I'm listening to that album.

Once the album is finished, I leave it till next time...otherwise my wife wouldn't speak to me!

I've just ripped around 150 albums (another 400 to go). I agree though, many of the 400 others I won't bother with straight away but I will continue to rip as soon as I buy new. I use Windows Media Player and rip WMA Lossless. I find it quite therapeutic! By the way PJ, you've reminded me to set a weekly reminder to back up to my external drive.
