ripping cd's to a pc?
ok, i'm not very clued up about this so i thought i'd ask here. i want to rip a few cd's to my pc so i can stream them in lossless format to my dac via airport express, i want to see how that sounds.
do i need to download an app for that? i'd prefer not to use itunes as it's not currently setup and if i go messing around with airport express i'll surely **** something else up..
ta..
would have thought Itunes would be simplest to be honest - at least you're certain that works with Airport Express
yea, itunes it is then![]()
hmmm, i could get to like this itunes, i opened it up, put in a cd and it asked if i wanted to import it. which i did, nice and simple the way it should be..
one thing though, i right clicked on one of the newly imported tracks and on the options list was "create aac version" , would this be a better version of the one already there? obviously i'm looking to get the highest quality rip...
You need to chose lossless in your preferences to get the highest quality from iTunes. AAC is essentially creating a compressed iPod/pad/phone memory version.
Can't recall how to set it from here (I'm not at home) although I'm sure I saw it on here today
thanks lee, yea the track info shows 256kbps, still sounds excellent streamed to the dac though, ill stick in another cd and see if there's an option to rip in lossless![]()
Max, once you've downloaded/installed iTunes (which takes a while on a PC, IIRC) if you click, 'Edit' then 'Preferences' under the 'General' tab you can choose what Itunes does with the CD when inserted into the drive , i.e show, begin playing, ask to import, import and eject, i use the later (which you choose from the drop-down box).
Next to that is an 'Import settings' button, click on it and you can choose what codec you import with, select ALAC, and tick the 'use error correction' box, then press ok.
Job done...
to rip in lossless go to: Edit > Preferences > Import Settings > Apple lossless Encoder and ok.
ta dave, i'd just found that, was about to ask which format to tick![]()

Max, are you using a PC with windows?
iTunes is only so so in windows as it cannot bypass windows resampling and other programmes running in the background. You need a Media Player that can connect directly and exclusively to your sound card. A mac is a different proposition, as itunes does work this way in the apple O/S. It makes a significant difference to the sound.
Yes it can,as it now supports WASAPI, and has been able to since iTunes 9...SteveR750:Max, are you using a PC with windows?

In which case!
I didn't find this when I tried it.....
It's in QT audio settings, though IIRC it only works with Vista/W7 32 bit, not 64 bit.SteveR750:

That's probably why then.
If it can work WASAPI mode in windows then it is going to sound significantly better than the windows default mode.

I use dbPoweramp to rip my tunes in Flac and then Media Monkey to manage the library - although MM will also rip them too. Not sure what file format your Airport Express supports though.
