iCloud thingy!

I have the requirments for iCloud and was wondering if it can be used for backup only? I definitely need to at some point but i would like to still use iTunes as i i ripped in ALAC and still want that quality for home audio.
Can you switch between iCloud and native iTunes or would i have to switch iCloud off to listen to ALAC playback.
