downloaded films
Have a lot of films that i have downloaded from the internet,How would be the best way to view them on my 8yr old Loewe tv without going to the expense of a TVix box.

Well there are plenty of options though none much cheaper to my knowledge than the £150 or so you can buy a TVix for.
I currently use an Xbox to stream stuff of my NAS (PS3 will do the same) giving you the option of Blu-ray and games as well.
WD to a media player for about £100 though you'll need storage on top of that.
Apple TV will allow you to connect to hard drives attached to the network as well as its own internal drive for about £170.
This Linksys is a pretty good deal for £130 combined with a DVD player.
Though it all depends on how you want to set the system up. Hope this helps.

I use the Linksys DMA2100 (the same as the one mentioned but without the dvd drive). It works very well. It can also stream up to 1080p video but doesn't decode mkv (my only problem with it).
I'm using the TViX HD M-6500a with a 1tb HDD with the latest firmware which allows HD audio pass through.
Pros:
- Excellent sound for my FLAC music collection via HDMI to my Onk 905
- Playback of almost every video format including mkv, m2ts and DVD image files
- Pass through of HD Audio, e.g. TrueHD and DTS HD Master with latest firmware
- Extremely portable
Cons:
- No playlist on-the-fly for audio files
- No support for WMA Lossless audio yet
- HD picture not quite on a par with my Sony BDP-S350
- Various bugs
On the whole I'm very pleased with the M6500, but as with most meadi players of this sort, regular firmware updates are required. Unfortunately, each firmware update seems to bring as many new problems as fixes!
The biggest surprise to me was how good music sounds, I was expecting it to be best for movies, but the quality of audio playback is superb.
I also have a tvix 6500 with internal 1tb harddisc which is a nice piece of equipment
you can also stream movies and audio from any pc in your network
and also backup your own blu-ray dvd's(havent got round to doing that yet)
but I agree with pete above you need to tweak every so often but i also think that there isn't a media player you don't have to tweak every now and again

What equipment are you currently storing the films on? If you intend on streaming the films to a media player and the films are decent quality you will need a wired network for best results. If not you'll need a media player with onboard storage.
