I really do think this is not going to be cheap!!! Am I better off getting an 64gb iPod touch or a cheap laptop that will DLNA to my amp?? This must be a cheaper option surely?? I would get either through auction site or a classifies section somewhere.

Confusing area! Maybe WHF could run a beginners basic article. Cheapest way is to plug in a usb drive if its just for music? Then its control I guess?

You can use the Yamaha app to stream music over your network, the amp I just got can still use the app but not the 1 part of app that streams over network!! Sad

I guess a cheap 2nd hand laptop running iTunes to APTV3 or the iPod touch.

Its just the amp is DLNA so I could stream "I think" from a laptop but not iTunes stored on laptop??

I personally think you should wait & hold off any further purchase until you have funds to go for a proper future proof system. Otherwise, you'll be in the market again when your 64GB iPod Touch becomes full. In the near future, you may want to stream videos as well. A NAS drive is exactly that, future proof.

Is the Seagate Theatre or similar another option?

Hey all,

As you all know I'm trying to get all my music available so I can stream

It or play it controlled from my iPhone,

How about I subscribe to iTunes match so my iTunes library is in the cloud which can be accessed from my aptv3 from mt iPhone??

This can work surely!!

Yes it should work well. Your Apple TV should be able to access it directly without the need of your iPhone.  Smile

Yes it surely should, for the sake of £25 I can see if it's worth it. Yes it will be displayed on aptv but also on my idevice!!

RE: Can I stream from a NAS? I haven't a clue!!

You have a couple of options with this. If you go down the NAS-route, as long as it it DLNA capable you can download an app called Plug Player from the iTunes store which will allow you to play (non-DRM) files direct off the NAS. There is also a Twonky app available now as well. You can still use iTunes to manege and purchase music, jsut make sure your iTunes folder is moved onto the NAS itself. You can even use the app to 'send' the music to another renderer on the networks - I use this facility sometimes to use the iPhone to send music to my Denon reciever.

The other option is iCloud/iTunes match - once you pay the subscription and waited an age for iTunes to 'cloud' your music you'll be able to access it directly fromt he ATV without the need for iTunes to be running on the network. It's also available on any other iDevices you have so any purchases you make on the iPhone 'should' appear in your iTunes library. Apparently they are making movies and TV shows available via iCloud as well - not tried this yet though.

Good luck!

RE: Can I stream from a NAS? I haven't a clue!!

Hello Darrell,

I think I can help, a bit, I already do what you're trying to achieve, forgive the long post.

Western Digital MyBook Live (2TB) > Iphone ( using apps) > Airport Express.

THE NAS

It has DLNA, and Twonky Server someone more knowledegable than me can say if Twonky and DLNA are the same thing.

It also has Itunes media server..... Someone should put me right on this but I think Itunes Media server is ONLY for Itunes, not I devices, which confuses a people.

So the Iphone gets content via DLNA, then pushes it to airport express via airplay.

THE APP

There is a few to choose from,  and honestly all the ones I've tried are not great. Your options will differ depending which NAS you choose.

(Free) WD2Go is a remote access for MyBookLive which is intended for getting your files if your in a hotel via internet etc.

(Free) ML Player Lite works  ( i don't know what benefits pro version has).

These two have a MAJOR FLAW ( for me) you can not browse other files whilst playing music at the same time, if you do the music simply stops, the best comparison I can make is to Iphone music, where you may see a back button or Artist, these two simply say DONE, stopping the content.

(Free)  Twonky Mobile, although I paid for it last year grrrrr Angry ,  I doesn't have the problem the other two have. You add music to a playlist and you can still search. Navigation isn't great but it works very well.

All above can be used with Airplay,  Twonky is best of 3, none of them look special, but thats your choice. Probaly more out there. I've tried others, can't remember names, I deleted them if I couldn't get them working ( will have a think and post back)

I assume it would work with Apple TV, they work with my Airport express, and Marantz M-CR 603 airplay.

Good Luck
