Bufallo Terastation Nightmare
I use my terastation for saving data at work, I Tunes and all my pics from over the years.
Initialy Pleased with the device as it is DNLA capable and offers huge storage with very fast data transfer....... Then all the wheels fell off...!
The station then started having problems with loading the kernal on booting so tech support advised me to upgrade the firmware in emergency mode. ........After 30-40 atempts this finaly happened.
Unfortunately it then would not mount the array...! Tech support suggested it was a hard drive issue, completed all the processes the asked me to perform still no joy.
Then a sudden realiseation that I needed to retrieve all my data which was easier said than done, using both PC and Linux based retrieval software.
Then rang round to see how much to get the data from the raid 5 discs onto a standard hard drive from dedicated companies and was quoted between £350 - £2600....
I was lucky enough to have known a guy, who new a guy and so on who eventually after 10 hours of messing about (Highly intellegent Technical chap) finally retrieved the files.
Not to mention another 3 days of messing about to get the terastation back on its feet.
I wrote this thread simply to inform anyone who wishes to purchase a device like this to be carefull as the pitfalls outway the benifits when dealing with your precious files, I have also learned a lot about the machines tempramental nature and although was recomended by what hi-fi, there are much better and stable systems out there.... BEWARE!
