Synology DS212j or DS413j NAS with WD-Red 3TB HD's as an iTunes Server
Hello all,
The hard drives you are looking for are out of stock everywhere and have been for several weeks (I am looking for them too).
Depsite WD's assurances to the contrary, they are not in a position to ship these (for reasons they are keeping to themselves).
Hello all,
And this article may help as well http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to-a-new-hard-drive/P400/
As BigBoss says and I can confirm that unless you have the ATV2 (or maybe 1) jailbroken you'll need your PC/Mac on to stream from NAS to Apple TV. There is no jailbreak for ATV3 - rumours are that its in the works but others say its not possible.
Alternatively if you have an iDevice then the synology apps such as DSAudio or DS File allow you to airplay from NAS to iThingy onto ATV. I think the apps are also available on android but can't testify to how they work.
Chisy
if you are running the nas in raid 1, I wouldn't bother with the red drives, any should do. After all, that's the point of raid 1.....

This thread will be of help.
Let us know how you get on with the setup & we'll chip in if you get stuck.
I may be wrong, but I don't think Apple TV 3 can read off a NAS without being jailbroken, & I'm yet to hear of anyone jailbreaking Apple TV 3 yet.
