Hello all,

I am in the process of ordering one of the above Synology NAS drives with the WD-Red 3TB WD30EFRX hard drives in a RAID1 mirroring format to use as an iTunes Media Server for our home. The NAS will interact via the AppleTV3, I hope!
Could anyone provide any additional do's and don'ts to enable this setup to work. I looked on the Synology website and could not find any instructions as to how one imports music and video to the SynologyNAS once it is setup and running. Or is that automatic as it is in fact the defacto storage of the iTunes Library and the iTunes application on any computer is just an interface? That is my understanding.
BTW, if I order the larger 4 bay variant, then it is planned to also double as a home surveillance/camera server with ABUS outside cameras.
BigBoss, I see you have a SynologyNAS media server setup, I'd appreciate your views.
Thank you in advance for any and all feedback.

This thread will be of help.

Let us know how you get on with the setup & we'll chip in if you get stuck. Smile

I may be wrong, but I don't think Apple TV 3 can read off a NAS without being jailbroken, & I'm yet to hear of anyone jailbreaking Apple TV 3 yet.

The hard drives you are looking for are out of stock everywhere and have been for several weeks (I am looking for them too).

Depsite WD's assurances to the contrary, they are not in a position to ship these (for reasons they are keeping to themselves).

And this article may help as well  http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to-a-new-hard-drive/P400/

As BigBoss says and I can confirm that unless you have the ATV2 (or maybe 1) jailbroken you'll need your PC/Mac on to stream from NAS to Apple TV.  There is no jailbreak for ATV3 - rumours are that its in the works but others say its not possible.

Alternatively if you have an iDevice then the synology apps such as DSAudio or DS File allow you to airplay from NAS to iThingy onto ATV.    I think the apps are also available on android but can't testify to how they work.

if you are running the nas in

if you are running the nas in raid 1, I wouldn't bother with the red drives, any should do.  After all, that's the point of raid 1.....
