Laptop Issue - Optical Output Via HDMI?

Hi guys, recently got a new laptop and (to my dismay) it doesnt have an optical out. I wanted to connect it directly to my AVI ADM9's - is this possible via HDMI with some kind of adaptor? At the moment i am having to feed the HDMI output through my TV and get the optical output from there - not ideal as the TV has to be kept on the relevant HDMI channel when playing music. Any suggestions welcome - thanks in advance!

Does the headphone socket not double up as an optical out?  Which model laptop is it?
