Little confused, I'm moving back towards stereo sound and read a lot about streaming etc, but surely it's better to buy the cd and upload to iTunes at lossless than just buy off iTunes?

i play most of my music via AirPlay so use iTunes but very rarely buy from there, am I missing something or is buying a cd still the best way to get quality?

I've bought more CD's in the past year than ever before. I would never download an album from iTunes unless it was 24/96. If it was standard 16/44 I'd just buy the CD. Buying the CD means you own it now, and forever. Lose a hard drive and the CD's you own can be ripped again.

me too, although i have downloaded a couple of albums at 24/96 that i couldnt buy on CD just to see if i could tell the difference. i would never download a track from i-tunes, not only do i hate the program but the tracks are sometimes more expensive than the CD equivalent and i like the physical media

I've probably purchased more cd's recently than i ever have done, the only time I download is when Bigboss posts Amazon mp3 vouchers on the forum.

I too have bought (and ripped)  more CDs since getting my first DAC  about 5 years ago.

More in the last two years with my current system.

Even a 256K AAC rip from a CD sounds better than a 256K AAC download from iTunes.

And could you tell the difference ?

I stream, Airplay via Airport Express and Spotify / iTunes. All hassle free however I don't download from iTunes either (I even have a £50 voucher to spend un-used).

You cant beat a cd though.

Yep.

Yes and no. 'Audiophile' hi-res 24/96 or 24/192 'studio master' downloads often sound better than the CD.  But sourcing somewhere in the UK where you can legally download mainstream albums and artists in hi-res format is a challenge. You're reasonably well-served by Linn and Naim if you're a classical-music lover.

I buy most of my CDs from Amazon, where you usually get a free MP3 version as well.  MP3 might not be as good as FLAC or other "lossless" formats, but for listening on headphones at the PC, or driving in thhe car, it's good enough.

I will keep buying CDs unless or until the music industry wakes up and starts offering FLAC versions on DVDs.  They used to be able to cope with releasing stuff on vynil, cassettes, and at one point,, on 8-track cartridges as well.  It's about time they woke up and addressed the desire from many people for higher-than-CD sound quality.

Not enough demand. That's been demonstrated over and over again in the past with various formats (even pre-digital ones).

What is 'many' to you is a fly speck to a major label.

No. Until the rights management of downloaded music is sorted out I won't touch it with a barge-pole and will always buy the CD or higher quality physical format. Similarly I would prefer subscribing to an unlimited audio streaming service (or free to air radio) before buying any download.

RE: Is there any reason to stop buying cd's?

I hadn't bought CDs for years, then over the last few months (since uploading all my CDs), I've been looking out for bargains to upload, and then either sell them on, or store them away with the others.

Yesterday I got 6 CDs for a fiver at a Car Boot, and there were lots of people selling their CDs for 50p each or less, though I couldn't find any I liked among these.

^^^WHS history is littered with dead formats which sounded better than something they were designed to replace but didn't, because better sound quality alone does not attract the masses. In fact Joe Public is prepared to sacrifice an awful lot of SQ for convenience.

RE: Is there any reason to stop buying cd's?

Since 2007 I did buy less CD albums than ever and only bought the real interesting ones with an extra DVD to go with it. (like the Crowded House album Time On Earth and Neil Young's Chrome Dreams)

In the last 3 years I was rethinking about how & what to play my CD's with, should I go the 'streaming' way, with a NAS-system or standalone Mac > external HDD.

Another question for me was which artists and/or music-genre can I buy in FLAC on which websites?! Quest

Now I know all this I started to buy some CD's again, including some from 2009 to 2011 which I missed when they came out.

And usually for a reduced price. excellent!

Also I buy some new albums/songs in 16b/44.1khz FLAC's on the Boomkat webshop or NinjaTune label.

I ripped all of my 'best of... / greatest hits' and compilations CD's and play them with the MacMini.

All those years of using a Mac and iTunes I never really liked to buy my music on the iTunes-store in AAC or mp3 likes.

Just wanted 'CD-quality'. Tongue

SInce getting into DACs and headphones I've bought loads more CDs. Like many of you guys, I've probably made more CD purchses in the last year than the rest of my life combined. I do love Spotify though and never touched that silly downloadify plugin. MP3 can suck it!
