Help "PC not synced to TV" problem

Talking of resolution, I have a problem when connecting my laptop to our television (32"). We get the picture, but after a minute or so, it goes blank and says, "PC not synced to TV". After a few seconds, it all works again for a few minutes, then repeats the above.
Someone told me it was a resolution problem The TV is "asking" the laptop for a size, it doesn't get an answer, so it keeps going blank.
This sounds a load of tosh to me, but I wonder if any of you experts have any idea what the problem is. I have Googled it, but can't find a solution to this intermittent problem.
