If the FLACs are 24-bit, IME it's best to convert FLACs into AIFF using Max, then once the AIFFs have 'appeared' in iTunes, use it to convert to ALACs. (Don't forget to transfer the AIFFs to Trash.)

If Max is used to convert 24-bit FLACs into ALACs, the latter will end up as 16-bit.

I've always used XLD http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/23430/x-lossless-decoder as long as I've used a Mac.

Currently trying XLD as i'm not sure which MAX version i need, as above.

XLD is giving me a headache. i'm playing the "FLAC" file so i presume it's converted but i cant get the files into the iTunes library? Currently there in "All My Files" which i can play but at a fixed volume???
