Why shouldn't I buy the panasonic 210
First post in quite a while (time spent just enjoying my kit)
My pioneer Bdp lx08 blu ray player has (and still does) serve me well in the 2 years or so I have had it. A good match for my sc-lx81 amp and Kuro tv.
I have had the odd intermittent problem in that it can refuse to play old DVDs so now it only gets new blu rays and DVDs I recently joined the love film supported tescovdvd hire service and 3 of 4 blu rays I've received have got so far and then froze. The only way I can unfreeze them is to turn off the player then turn it on again. I took the discs to my parents house who have a Sony s350 and that played them with no problems. So I am thinking that my lx08 is perhaps a bit fussy if it isn't fed a pretty clean disc.
I have made some tentative calls and it seems that it will cost about £80 for someone to look at it and fix it. But then I wonder how long it will be fixed for and what happens if 3, 6, 12 months down the line it goes again.
So I'm thinking of cutting my losses and getting the Panasonic Dmp-bdt210 award winner to replace my lx08.
Seen it on amazon for £143.
Quality of blu ray playback is my number one criteria
Psi why shouldn't I get the Panasonic?
No reason why you shouldn't get one. I've seen the player in action & it's an excellent performer all round.
Will the 210 play the BBC Iplayer, demand 5 etc
I don't believe it does. And welcome to the forum.
Thank you, my only concerns are that the Whathifi video review and the 210 advertised at Curry's both clearly say you can play/catch up with iplayer.
I purchased a 210 today I have just updated the firmware and clearly I cannot get iplayer.
Hi, As i understand it, Panasonic will be launching another firmware upgrade soon WHEN they have the ok on the BBC iPlayer.
The last update was to add more apps and was launched whilst still talking with the BBC.

I have a Pioneer BDP-320, and from what I can gather, Pioneer Blu Ray players don't like scratched (even slightly), or dirty disc. I don't think it's a case of repair needed, they're just very fussy.
I haven't joined a film rental company for this exact reason. What I do instead is buy the films I want, either brand new, or in as new condition second hand, then once played, either keep them, or sell them on ebay.
Mostly I lose a bit on them, but occasionally I sell them for more than I buy them for. Averages out at a loss of around a pound a film, so just as cheap as renting, but with a little more work involved obviously.
Just depends if you can be bothered
I've had the Panasonic 110 for 5 weeks now and have watched a few blu-rays. Excellent picture quality and audio (bitstream), load times fast, quiet in operation.
Paul.
I've had exactly the same problem with my 51FD and Tesco/Lovefilm Dave and have plumped for the the Panasonic DMP-BDT310. I'll be getting it for Christmas hopefully so can't say whether there's an improvement yet. I'm a bit gutted really as the Pioneer is/was a great player and matches my lx51 amp.
I thought about getting it looked at myself, but figured it would be waste of money if it didn't work. Good luck if you do get it looked at.
I bought the Panasonic a couple of weeks ago and the picture and sound are great.
My only issue (and advice would be welcome) is the DLNA playback of music plays them at roughly half speed so they sound like a weird 80's remix!
my only issue with the panasonics is that they have very poor format support from external sources... i couldnt get my 310 to play anything in the line of mkv etc from external hard drive, and the browsing structure was horrible for playing back music.. plus my 310 was very loud when spinning discs but apparently this is not a widely reported problem
To be fair, very fewplayers support mkv, as its difficult to support. The container is open source, but there is 40 video codecs inside, hundreds of codecs in total that need support, so its a bit of a mine field to cover for a small minority of the public that needs it.
The 310 does support the MKV container, but for the very reason above, there are so many different variables with MKV and it causes problematic playback. Do you have the latest firmware update?
Cant comment on the browsng of the 310 as I use my Apple TV for music, but I havefound the drive to be practically silent. I sit 2.5m away from the drive.
