I am thinking of upgrading by Panasonic bd210, and was considering either the Sony S790 or the Panny BDT-500. Both got five star reviews, the Panasonic being slightly more expensive. Do you only benefit greater sound quality on the Panasonic, if you use the analogue outputs to connect to an amp? I will be connecting it via hdmi pass through via my amp to my tv. Would the sound quality of both players be pretty much the same connected via hdmi, or is the Panasonic miles ahead?

Why do you want to upgrade your Panasonic 210? Bear in mind that the perceived improvements to audio / video will be much smaller than you expect. Definitely demo before purchasing, to ascertain if the improvements (if any) are worth the extra outlay.

My understanding that audio is at its best via HDMI as this is where the manufacturers have concentrated on. Analogue outs are for those who have an older amp without HDMI.

Hi Bigboss, I just fancied an upgrade, also extra online services like netflix and stuff are on both players. I used to have a sony s370, and I did prefer the menu system in the Sonys more than the Panasonics. As you say, the increase in picture and audio quality will likely be minimal, so its just a case of wanting the latest technology more than needing. I may just stick with what I have, thanks Bigboss.
