Sony Blu-Ray for SACD
I have been thinking about buying a
Sony BDP-S490 player to play mainly cds and SACDs I see it is now only £80 would this be a good choice? It will be into a Dac or active speaker. Not really bothered about playing dvds but that would be a bonus.
OK thanks, will hav eto rethink, I don't want to spend much on a SACD player as I probably won't buy many sacds as difficult to buy and expensive.
"most universal Blu-ray players - even high end ones - will only output native DSD through HDMI, and internally they convert DSD to PCM, unlike a good audio-only player."
Now does that matter if the signal is going straight into a DAC?
How much is your Marantz 7001?

There aren't many DACs that handle DSD natively and I don't think any of those are HDMI equipped.
It definitely doesn't matter if you're plugging it into an AV amp that will decode DSD over HDMI, there are a fair few of those around now and of course you'll need an AV amp/processor if you want to listen to multi-channel SACDs.
OK having looked into more the important thing seems to be optical out which the 490 has also it has HDMI as well, in fact only thing it does not have seems to be wifi.
No I don't want multi-chaneel just stereo is fine.
You might want to check if it'll pass DSD out of the optical connection though.
Thanks that is a fair point.
I thought sacd was to output 5.1? In stereo is it better than cd? I have only 2 sacd's borh in 5.1 but so expensive I'd not be buying many.. Sony does fine for cd's, sacd's and mostly bluray ofcourse to 7.1
I will stand corrected.
I would ask do u want a bluray player to spin a sacd or a cd player to spin sacd. You mention no other kit.

I’m not copying over the reply I received from WHF on this very subject without their permission, but I queried this following the change of “House Rules” last year.
Essentially the reply was that they are “relaxed” about linking if you are a private individual , not trade, and it’s relevant to a fellow members interest but they don’t encourage blatant trading.
Please respond through Preloved as requested.
Thanks.
I wish I had paid attention when exchanging my pristene set of AR speakers a few months back ! I would actually encourage 'private trading' of this kind as I have mentioned here before and please dont think I was making a personal 'attack'. Hope it all turns out well for all parties. Cheers

I didn't take it personally at all, but it can/does get confusing about what is/isn't allowed!

That's not how I read the house rules:

That bit...

If you're not gonna watch any movies I'd rather get a good 2nd hand dedicated SACD player like a Marantz etc. Remember, most universal Blu-ray players - even high end ones - will only output native DSD through HDMI, and internally they convert DSD to PCM, unlike a good audio-only player.
