Hi

I've Just ordered a new Panasonic TX-P50vt65b tv an wandered if I upgraded my lx71 bluray player would I see any gains in picture quality. I'm not interested in 3D or any other extras such as internet etc, just the quality of picture.

If so, what is recomended?

Thanks

The main advantage newer

The main advantage newer players will give you, is faster loading times. Otherwise, you've got a brilliant player & you won't notice any performance improvements. What's the rest of your system like? Have you got a home cinema sound system?

I have just compared my 71 with the Oppo 103, Cambridge Audio 751bd, Marantz 7007 and there was no difference. Oh yeah and Pioneer 55! Smile

Gel, when you answer rocketrazor's question about contradiction (in the post immediately before this one) perhaps you could a question from me as well: if your Pioneer Bdp-lx71 is the best, then why is it in your second AV setup, rather than in your main Av setup (where the Oppo 103 is)? Surely the "best" Pioneer Bdp-lx71 should be in your main setup and the Oppo 103 should be in your second setup, no?? :? Smile

RE: Should I upgrade my pioneer bdp-lx71 blue ray player

Well the Pioneer was made five or six years back and still today nothing beats it, that for me makes it the best.  My Oppo 103 should beat it in theory being the newer thing and reference standard but doesn't.  I do like the remote though and on my Keane live Blu-ray on my Pioneer has a camera appear on the top right hand corner on the Oppo it doesn't, so I prefer to use my Oppo.  The Oppo loads quicker too.

RE: Should I upgrade my pioneer bdp-lx71 blue ray player

Just to confirm where I stand on the whole Blu-ray debate though, I have seen worse Blu-ray players than my Oppo 103 and Pioneer 71 and also the same standard.  The last five Blu-ray players I have tested were all the same prior to that the previous five which were all different in picture quality.  The ones with picture quality not as good were the Pioneer 52, the Sony 490, the Denon 2500bt, all of these Blu-ray players were different in picture quality.  So well I feel most Blu-ray players are the same especially the expensive ones, I have seen Blu-ray players that are not.

Gel I wondered if you ever tried the Pioneer  BDP LX91?  I've read people who say that they've gone from the 71 to the 91 and couldn't believe how much better the 91 is? (It should be for the price).

I did demo it about five years ago, and it was seriously good.  That is all about I can remember.  I have asked quite a few people about the difference between the two who have compared them and they said the difference was only little.  The expert opinion is that there is not much in it.  It did blow me away when I demoed it though.   Smile

I did buy it once but I sent it back, I just couldn't justify the price.  I got it brand new for £900 about three years ago.  That was a shop in Kent I think they have gone bust since though.

If you can get a Pioneer 91

If you can get a Pioneer 91 quite cheap, I would say around £500 because the owner has upgraded to 3D say, I would say buy, but I wouldn't spend too much on it. I would still like it myself but am not prepare to go very high to get it. It would have to be a great bargain. I would then use it as my second alongside the 71! Smile My stand won't take the weight of it unfortunately!

RE: If you can get a Pioneer 91

Because you've had the LX71 for a few years, I'd be interested to read your opinion on the LX91 if you ever did get it as you'd be able to make an informed comparison.  It does look like quite a beast in terms of size!  From what I understand, one of its main strengths is the 7.1 analogue audio outs which I'd be unlikely to use, but the picture quality is meant to be amazing as well.

Yep, no probs if I ever get one. Smile  I keep an eye on the classifieds on AVForums to see if there are any from time to time.  Yep, the advice from AVForums when reviewing the 91 was unless you are going to use the anolgue outputs then buy the 71, which was interesting.  I see there is one new one on eBay for £1400 - that must be the last one available.  They seem to command around at least £700 used, which is too high for me.

Is Pioneer still supporting

Is Pioneer still supporting firmware updates for LX91? What's the guarantee that future blu ray discs will be playable? Even £500 is a lot for it, IMO.
