Hi, can anyone help please? I want to buy a Blu Ray player that will output Dolby -Tru HD and Dts-Master HD sound via multi-channel analogue outputs (5.1) to my Sony Str-db940 amplifier. I really like the amp and dont want to sell it. And as it has a 5.1 multi-channel input on the rear, I think it can be done right? Any advise would be great. Thanks

RE: multichannel out puts?

Yes this is possible, though technically, the Blu-ray player will decode these formats onboard and then send the analogue signal to the amp via the multi-channel outputs. So you'll be getting HD audio, but since your amp won't be receiving the actual encoded signal, you won't get Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master Audio appear on the screen of your amp. For some reason this is very important to some people, so thought it was mentioning  Smile

Practically though, so long as the Blu-ray player can decode the formats onboard and has the multi-channel output ports, then yes, this is perfectly possible to do.

Thats great news, But which model? I would prefer Sony, dont mind buying a 2nd hand older model or a cheaper new Sony model. Which player would have both dolby tru-hd and dts -master hd processors on board and have the 5.1 analogue outputs I need?

None of the current Sony models have multichannel analogue outs I'm afraid. Sony S760 had them. Look at Panasonic BDT500:

Bigboss is, as ever, correct. Further, the Panasonic BDT500 is the only Blu-ray player that I can think of under £500 that has multichannel analogue outputs. Come to think of it, there probably aren't any AV receivers currently on the market below about £700 that have multichannel inputs! Multichannel analogue connections seem to be dying out - when I started in home cinema four years ago my first receiver, the £150 Yamaha RX-V363, couldn't receive sound via its HDMI inputs, but it did have 5.1 multichannel inputs, and digital coaxial and optical inputs.

You've not actually quoted a budget, but I assume it's around £300? If you can spend more then other machines come into play, but at that price the only new option is the Panasonic.

Ok guys here is an up date, I managed to purchase a Sony BDP-S500 for £47 + £15 postage on ebay. Im going out on a limb here, as the player has 5.1 analogue outputs on the rear and decoders onboard for Dolby Tru-Hd and Dts-HD so Im crossing my fingers that I will able to access HD audio via the 5.1 analogue outputs.

And yes Im aware that It wont do Dts-master Hd, But hey! on my budget. I cant complain.

I will let you all know when the player finaly arrives
