Hi,

My Pioneer player is dying so I am going to be looking for a replacement.

I don't use this machine a lot but it does support my small collection of multi channel DVD-A's and SACD's.

It does not have a HDMI out put and my current AV amp that I use does not have HDMI support either so I would ideally like a machine with analogue multi channel outputs.

The only candidate I can find is the Cambridge 651BD (or 650bd s/hand), are there any other options available ?

The price of this is a slight issue as it is considerably more than the best BD players so any suggestions hugely appreciated.

Thanks for reading.

RE: Multi Format Players

Hi,

Thats brilliant , thanks for the links.

I am not sure if the Denon supports DVD-A, doesn't mention in the notes but will check elsewhere.

I have since found a 651 BD at discount similar to the Denon price.

I also thought the Oppo's multiformat machines were more expensive so will see if I can find deals on them.

I am now thinking if there would be a benefit to upgrading my av amp to get hdmi benefit's but guessing even the good £300 bluray players won't support dvd-a or sacd so probably a 'false' economy, just gadget greed !
Will consider more and post in av amp section.

Thanks again

The Denon supports DVD Audio:

http://denon.co.uk/DocumentMaster/UK/DBP-2012UD_EN.pdf

Bear in mind that the Denon 2012UD is more in the league of CA 751BD with superior audio performance than the 651BD.

It makes sense to upgrade your AV receiver to an HDMi capable one, & go for Pioneer LX55 which plays both SACD & DVD-Audio.

EDIT: Pioneer LX54 is available for a bargain price & I think it supports DVD Audio as well (need to confirm this):

RE: Multi Format Players

Hi,

Good call on the LX 55, I am checking my current player and the fault seems only to be on dvd video playback, have just tried some sacd and they seem fine, trying dvd-a next.

If so could get a multiformat dvd with hdmi for the tv and just use the old one for my discs until i upgrade the amp.I don't want to spend a lot as I do not often use the system .

I was wondering if any of the Sony players support multiformat as the rest of the system is Sony, shall have a look.

Thanks again , good advice

Sony supports SACD but not DVD-Audio.

The Marantz UD7006 & Denon 2012UD are exactly the same players made by the same manufacturer. Just buy whichever is cheaper amongst the two.

RE: Multi Format Players

The Marantz link that unfocused gave (and which contains within it a link to the Denon review) mentions in its last paragraph that the Marantz has slightly better sound quality when playing CDs than the Denon. But, it does tend to be about £50 more expensive.

By the way, as bigboss says, the Sony BDP-S790 http://www.whathifi.com/review/bdp-s790 does play SACDs, but it lacks 7.1 multichannel analogue outputs, so if you bought it (currently about £220 from Richer Sounds, for example) then you would have to change your AV receiver for one that accepts HDMI inputs.

Nearly all the machines mentioned in this thread so far may not be available for much longer, for instance Richer Sounds lists the Denon DBP-2012UD as a clearance item at £380, and they have only FOUR machines left in the entire UK.
