Hopefully you'll be reading this Michael...  hello or goodbye

Thought I'd let you know mate I ended up getting the Denon 1713 and all I can say is that it's Awesome!!

It's a gorgeous looking player and built at about the right size, not as small / thin as say a Panasonic or Sony but not as big as the 2500BT so it's inbetween the two.

Still has the silky smooth tray and loads alot faster but where it stands out is the picture quality, let's just say the 2500BT has a very worthy replacement, wonderfully sharp, colourful images with great contrast and probably the best picture I've yet seen on bluray.

SACD playback is great too (dark side of the moon- pink floyd)

This combined with the new Pioneer SC-LX56 amp i also bought my sound has never sounded so good, so all in all a VERY happy bunny   party time!

Hi bigboss

Well I certainly recommend it with no hesitation at all as it took me a very long time to wanna part with my 2500BT (with which is now all boxed up and laying dormant) as the quality of that was fantastic IMO and very hard to beat until the 1713 came along

I can't praise it enough It's making me wanna watch all my bluray's again as it's like watching a newly re-mastered version of the film

I was one of the few that wasn't put of by the 2500BT's slow loading times but I must say the 1713 is incredibly fast  woohoo!

And It's so quiet can't hardly hear any noise from it at all (and yes I'm sad enough to even put my ear to it,  shifty )

So I'd at least give it a demo bigboss,  Wink

In a word.......Excellent !!

IMO It's just a little bit cleaner compared to the 2500BT and I always considered the 2500 one of the best upscaler's  Smile

I use Flight of the Phoenix DVD for my upscaler test disc (along with a few others) as i find it's a great quality DVD anyway, one of the better ones.

The picture is clean, nicely detailed with a nice colour palette, so NO faults to report here  excellent!

Hi Jase,

Sorry, only just seen this.

Glad you are happy, as you say the 2500BT has been a hard machine to beat.

Also nice to see you with a new Pioneer amp, I love the sound from mine with the Apex.

Happy watching and listening.

RE: Attention - Michael Hoy!! ref..Denon bluray player

Hi Jase,

As another former 2500BT owner, I have some interest in this thread.

Have you done A/B testing of the 2500BT and 1713 in terms of DVD upscaling? Parting with my 2500BT wasn't a decision I came to lightly (and likewise the slower loading times didn't bother me at all).

However, when I did A/B testing of the 2500BT against the Panasonic DMP-BDT120 in terms of DVD upscaling, any differences, in my view, were either non-existent, or so negligible as to be unnoticeable on a 50" screen.

After very careful consideration, I decided to stick with the Panasonic (which came free with a TV purchase) and buy a separate CDP with a superior DAC to my new receiver. I haven't looked back, but I'm wondering what I'd get from the Denon as a BD/DVD player that I'd be missing with the Panasonic.

I may pounce on a 1713 if the price drops a little more, if only for the superior build quality. For now, however, I'm certain my money would be better spent on an ISF calibration or subwoofer upgrade.

I have always believed that blu-ray technology is so good that you don't have to spend a lot on a player unless you want better build or a universal player to play SACDs, DVD-A etc. or better sound performance, not forgetting the AVR in the chain which may perform in certain departments just as well. A blu ray transport makes a lot of sense if you have an excellent AVR.  beauty, eh

RE: Attention - Michael Hoy!! ref..Denon bluray player

My question really relates to DVD upscaling and whether the 1713 would do an even better than my 120 job in this regard. I may pick one up if the price ever drops to around £200. It'd be nice to have a solidly constructed BDP in cabinet again, too...

Of course I'd audition first, but in my experience you can only tell so much from auditioning kit for a limited period of time. Countless other variables also become factors (display room acoustics, other partnering kit, calibration of all system components, etc.). Home trial is the only way to be sure, but you need to be on very friendly terms with a retailer for this to be possible. This is not to suggest auditions are waste of time (far from it). I'm merely arguing that auditioning kit can only tell you so much. It's therefore useful to get the views of owners on forums such as this.

Incidentally, my new Yammy is great for films (once I'd got past the awful YPAO results). It makes a reasonable stab at reproducing stereo content, but using a separate mid-to-high end CDP connected via analogue has made a remarkable difference. From what I've read, the 1713 wouldn't come close to matching my new CDP in terms of stereo performance over analogue. I'd be interested to give the Denon a spin as a SACD/DVD-A player, though. I don't own a single SACD or DVD-A disc, but it'd be nice to have that option.

However, as I say, I'm mainly interested in how the 1713 performs with DVDs and whether this would justify the outlay.

@ strapped for cash

Yes I have done a comparison SFC and the differences with upscaling where very slight

I'm not really to fussed about upscaling as I havn't that many DVD'S left, so I dont pay to much attention to it if I'm honest.

I wouldn't have thought it would be worth buying the 1713 for it's upscaling capabilities alone and I havn't seen the panasonic in action to compare.

But like you have already said a home demo is always the way  Wink

Thanks Jase,

Likewise, I've upgraded most films in my collection to Blu-ray, but there are quite a few favourites yet to be released on the Blu-ray format (and that may never see a high definition release).

Glad you're enjoying your new player!

I used to still have lots of DVD's when I first got a bluray player, so upscaling was important to me way back then and the 2500BT certainly delivered the goods in that dept.

But if my reason to upgrade was for better upscaling I wouldn't trade in the 2500BT for the 1713 for it, hope that helps  Smile
