sc-lx87 or sc-lx57
English

:quest: Hi guys,my current system is a pioneer  SCLX82,Panasonic TX-L47DT65B tv,Marantz UD7007 blu ray,Monitor audio SILVER 8's,all hooked together with good quality interconnects.I have recently upgraded my blu ray player to the marantz and have not been disapointed, picture quality is superb ,a few months prior i upgraded my tv to the Panasonic and again i have not been disapointed.I am now looking at my amp and considering either the pioneer SCLX57 or SCLX87 ,Ihave a 4mtr x 5mtr lounge and apart from gaining '3d pass through' above my current amp am i going to notice a big difference in sound, and based on current reviews of the '57' is the extra £670 for the '87' going to be worth the investment considering the size of my room. Would welcome any feed back please. PS would you also recommend a change of speakers at some point.

The 87 has been tuned by Air Studios (Professional Music Studio) which should mean it is better with music realism; however the only way to tell if you can hear the difference is to try them side by side and choose the one you like best. (No one or any review can make this decision for you)

The same will apply to the speakers.

Hope this helps

Bill

SCLX87 all day long for me (even if the speakers weren't as good as the Silver 8s).

82 was also tuned by air studios.  AirPlay and pass through will be the biggest changes I would have thought. Functions have evolved like the control app  Will be interesting to hear your opinion on the 82 vs 87 in terms of sq.

I don't think buying a new Pioneer amp is worth it, you already have a great Pioneer amp.  They don't change that much and as for 3D pass through you have your Blu-Ray player to do that.  You have great speakers too.

If you really want to change something change your TV for the Panasonic 55VT65.   Wink

I assume by silver 8 the op has a stereo pair of the new monitor audio range or the rs/x range. Or is it a 5.1 settup that is required.

Hi derekbryan. That's a really nice system you have there. Smile  It really would pay to audition the two new models togehter with your current '82, if you can. We were huge fans of the '82 when we originally reviewed it a few years ago. Even if you feel the new models sound better, (personally, i think the '87 is the more likely of the two to impress against the '82), it's then a case of deciding if any preceived jump in quality is big enough to justify the cost.

 Hi Guy's, thank you all for your feedback , it's interesting to hear other people's thoughts and ideas. I will give it some more thought but think I will probably go for the Sclx87 as this is the direct replacement for my 82. I suppose any improvements will be subtle but hopefully there will be an improvement that I can appreciate. I will let you know how i go on. Thanks again for your response.

I'd very much appreciate your feedback Derek as and when you have it all set up.  The '87's definitely on my radar in the coming months.  One worthwhile feature new to this year's Pioneer receivers is the built-in Spotify Connect.

Obviously the '87 would be a more significant step up the range from my current receiver than yours, but perhaps like you, my experience with Pioneer receivers has been very positive, so I'd be reluctant to move to other brands unless there was a very compelling reason to do so.

There was quite an improvement jump from the 83 to the 85, and while the jump to the 86 wasn't as big, there was still an improvement (I know, I have owned them all). Jumping from an 82 (as good as it is, and yes, it is still good) to an 87 should produce a very noticeable upgrade.

I would agree with David that the jump from the 85 to the 86 was not massive, I have the 85 and borrowed an 86 for a week.

Not heard the 87 yet.

If you to go up in quality by a serious margin then you should be looking to go pro/power

Lots of combos in this arena + extra cabling to consider but thats how you will get a considerable improvement over the single box solution

RE: sc-lx87 or sc-lx57

Hi,derek again, just to let you all know i went out at wkend and bought myself the SC_LX87 .I installed it on sunday taking time to remake all my spkr connection (silver aniversary) and fit new banana plugs.I put a cd in and let it play for a while to warm up  then used the auto setup system.I then put on dire straits 'love over gold' and played 'private investigations' and wow what a sound ,the instruemental in the middle is awsome the twang of the nylon strings makes you feel like they are about to break ,then in comes the electric guitar which really makes you sit up ,followed by the drums which pan from left to right and back again. So far so good, replacing cd for blu ray and tom cruises 'oblivion' again does not dissapoint. The scene where tom goes down into the 'sink hole ' is a good example of what this amp can do.The water drips are so realistic you almost reach for an umbrella, and then the action starts, the speed and accuracy with which this amp places effects is superb.I then swopped blu ray for a good old fashioned dvd of The Eagles 'hell freezes over' which in my opinion is still on of the best concert dvd's ever produced.Selecting the DTS option its not long before you have left the comfort of you lounge and you are at the venue. You can at any time pick an instrument to follow and pick it out.I think its difficult to highlight the differences between the 87 and my old 82 without listening to them both together but on reflection the i feel the 87 is a faster ,more accurate but more than everything else it seems to draw you in more to what you are either listening to or watching,do i have any regrets in spending the money .Hell no,worth every penny. PS. just a couple of other points .1 the remote is not as good as the old one, feels flimsy considering the cost of the amp and 2;if you want to read through the manual,'which i like to do ',you will have to print it off yourself ,all 124 pages and thats not all of them ?,come on pioneer i had a full manual with my 82.

Thanks for the feedback Derek.  Always useful to hear about happy punters as well as complaints.

As for the thick manual, I think that's the way most manufacturers are going, and in a way I don't blame them.  I keep the manual of my receiver in a pdf file on my ipad.  I probably find this more convenient because my ipad's never too far away in the listening room.

How do you feel the '87 harmonises with the MA Silvers?  Do you think the balance (bright / warm) has changed at all?
