I know it's been asked many times before, but... Musical AV receiver?
As per my thread in the other section, it's upgrade time.
I'm upgrading the 5.1; although it will spend more time playing music than it will movies.
I currently have the Tannoy F3 5.1 speakers and TX-NR609 amp.
I auditioned the KEF Q500 and R300 speakers yesterday, and rate the R300 very well. They portray much more emotion, heart, and clarity than the Q500s and despite their diminutive size seem to have better bass extension and much better control. The Q500s were best described as "Heartless" and "Floppy" in my eyes.
I'm auditioning the B&W CM series today.
It seems if I were to opt for a 5.1 system based around CM5 up front and CM1 in back it would be a lot cheaper than the equivalent KEF system based around R300s up front and R100s in back, but I've read some wonderful things about the CM5, so we will see.
What I of course need to think about now is a suitable AV receiver to partner them with.
Sevenoaks had the Pioneer SC-LX56 driving the KEFs yesterday, however (as the gentleman in the store quite rightly said) it didn't quite have a firm enough grip on the bass for fully enjoyable music playback.
Things improved a lot with the "Pure / Direct" mode enabled, but both the Q500s and (to a much lesser extent) R300s exhibited a less-than-absolutely-firm-grip on bass reproduction, especially evident in Massive Attack's Teardrop.
Bottom line - what AV receiver( for upto £1,500 is / are the most musical?
