Do AV receivers have a 'stereo' button?
Hi.
I live on the 2 channel side of the hifi/AV 'world' and know nothing about 5.1 or 7.1 AV receivers.
A colleague has just asked if AV receivers have a button one can push to select Stereo when just listening to music.
I have no idea. Do they?
Thanks.
Hi Chebby.
If My Yamaha 667 is set to "straight " it decodes the signal as it gets it and outputs that signal, therefore if it receives a stereo signal thats what it outputs.
Thanks.
Is this usual/typical for AV receivers? (I think my colleague is interested in the Denon AVR-1312 and similarly priced/spec'ed models.)
On my Yamaha the button is 'Effect', which when turned off only plays through the front two channels. The setting is stored per input so the 'CD' input is permanently set to 'effect off', for example.
Yes it is usual, by default AV Receivers will play whatever they receive in the format they receive it in, you need to press buttons if you want it to do additional processing on the signal. It'll also be set for each input, so you can leave your two-channel sources to perform no processing whilst setting (for example) your Sky input to perform Dolby Pro-Logic (II(x/z)) processing if you wish. Well, you can on my AVR anyway and that's over ten years old.
My colleague thanks everyone.
He is also amazed that I got four answers to his question in just 20 minutes!
Just for completeness, from the 1312 manual you appear to cycle through modes using the 'Surround' buttons on the remote until you get to 'Stereo'. If it's a multichannel source it's downmixed to 2-channel.
Chebby, I'm only familiar with the Arcam AVRs. They have a "Stereo Direct" button for listening to a pure analogue stereo input. It cuts out all digital processing to give as pure a signal as possible. There is also no bass management, so bass signals will not be sent to a sub.

Yes, i know on my amp their is a button that you can cycle through the various sounds eg. dolby or stereo.
