Apologies in advance for what is a question I think I know the answer too, but would like to check with you all nonetheless.

I'm selling my Denon AVR-2113 and have bought a Marantz SR6007 AVR, purely to gain pre-outs. This is because I have until now kept my AVR/Hifi sides seperate. Now I want to use the same front speakers (B&W 684s).

Am I right in thinking, that seting them up together using the front channel preouts from the SR6007 to the PM7004 I will still be using both pre and power sections of the 7004 when listening to my CDs (CDP goes straight into the back of the 7004)? And that only the devices connected to the SR6007 will use the AVRs pre-amp?

I dont really care about movies but want to ensure my CDs sounds the same as it did when it was just the CD player, integrated amp and 684s, as I love that combination just how it is.

Sorry if this is a terribly foolish post, I just want reassurance I'm understanding it correctly as I've not used pre-outs or combined my hifi and AVR before.

TIA.

Keith

Yes, that's correct.

Thank you for quick clarification Andrew.

Is there a downside to this arrangement?

I understand pre-outs are variable, and as such, the volume of the 7004 may have to be raised somewhat for TV audio and lowered again before trying to play music.

Doesn't look like the SR6007 has another methos (tape out?)  which I assume would sort this issue for stereo TV and Music listening?

RE: AVR + Integrated Amp via Pre-Outs. Quick question

The PM7004 has a 'power amp direct' input designed for just this purpose. Connect the preouts from the receiver to this, and when you want to watch something with sound via the receiver, you just press the 'power amp direct' button on the front of the amp, and you're all set.

This input bypasses the volume control on the PM7004, so level is adjusted using the receiver's main volume control - you just run the initial set-up of the receiver with the front channels going through the PM7004, and you'll be fine.

BTW no, tape outs won't be suitable for this application, as they'll deliver a stereo downmix of the source material, not the front L/R channels resulting from the receiver's internal surround decoding.

Thanks

Superb information again thank you Andrew. I'm relieved the two will pair well together in this arrangement.

Thanks for clearing some of the mystery I've felt toward the AVR side of things: I've never really investigated that side, as I rarely watch a film/movie, just stereo music is my thing. Wife does love listening to her iPod via airplay though, so nice to know switching between that AVR source and my CDs wont require urgent volume adjustment to save the 684s from popping!

beauty, eh
