Good Luck All
English

As a few of you are probably aware, things got kind of out of hand on another thread a week or so back (for reasons I'm not entirely sure of) and I've been reflecting ever since. At the end of the day, it really got me thinking about what I contribute here and why. It's made me realise, in many ways, I'm wasting my life. At one point, answering questions on this forum was more important to me than actually working on the solutions my employer was paying me to work on - when you think about that, that's crazy and it has to stop.

Sure, hopefully I've helped a few people along the way, but I know now that generally I'm not giving out advice others don't already know. I've also realised I'm attempting to self-importanise myself (a new English phrase?!) i.e. make myself feel good by helping others here rather than solve the actual problems in my life which all stem from my job and how much I hate doing it.

So, for now at least, I need to say goodbye. I've enjoyed the forums and I'll probably still read them every now and then. I'm sure many of you won't care, but I thought I would at least announce it so people who do care know I wont be contributing any more...

Well, maybe the odd post here and there... Wink

You've helped me out more than a few times in the past, so thanks for that. Whatever will you do with all your free time now? Do proper work?!

Blimey! that's a turn-up for the old plus fours. I know what you mean, it seems more often than not, when dealing with the newer guys, I end up repeating myself and feel I can offer little else in advice terms, despite having hi-fis for over 30 years.

For the past two months I've had time off work due to illness, hence why I've spent more time on the forum than I used to. Likewise I took some time out recently and found that I was reinvigorated - I just became stale.

Enjoyed most of your threads and posts, even if I didn't contribute directly.

Good luck, prof!

Sorry to see you go prof - have enjoyed reading your contributions since I've been on the forums. I empathise with you on the job thing - after working in IT for nearly 20 years I've had enough of it and need to find something far more enjoyable and rewarding. Good luck with your own journey, whatever you decide to do.

Happens to many of us now and then. Don't dwell on it. Can't have been that bad or you wouldn't still be here to announce you're not going to be here. (I know what I mean.)

professorhat: At the end of the day, it really got me thinking about what I contribute here and why. It's made me realise, in many ways, I'm wasting my life. Just a matter of adjusting your life/interests/work balance. Again we all have to tweak that now and then. You don't need to disappear.

professorhat: Sure, hopefully I've helped a few people along the way, but I know now that generally I'm not giving out advice others don't already know. I've also realised I'm attempting to self-importanise myself (a new English phrase?!) i.e. make myself feel good by helping others here rather than solve the actual problems in my life which all stem from my job and how much I hate doing it.

Leaving us will simply mean spending more time alone with the hated job and fewer people to moan at about it.

Also we should not let anyone go who can think up new English expressions with such alacrity  Smile

professorhat: So, for now at least, I need to say goodbye. I've enjoyed the forums and I'll probably still read them every now and then. I'm sure many of you won't care, but I thought I would at least announce it so people who do care know I wont be contributing any more...

I am sure many of us care (well, as much as you can for someone on an internet forum you understand). It is reliable regulars - like you - who make up the 'furniture' round here and whom newcomers come to rely upon to give advice. I doubt  that many new forum members come here for the first time to get advice from other newcomers. People like yourself - who help form the backbone of an online 'community' - are why some of them stick around after they get their answers.

professorhat:Well, maybe the odd post here and there... [;)

As a great Austrian philosopher once said.. "You'll be back."  (Actually he said "I'll be back" but I am not clever with English like Andrew.)

Re: Good Luck All

it was macarthur who said i shall return

The President of the United States ordered me to break through the Japanese lines and proceed from Corregidor to Australia for the purpose, as I understand it, of organizing the American offensive against Japan, a primary objective of which is the relief of the Philippines. I came through and I shall return.

Seriously though, I know where you're coming from. Forum fatigue does tend to set in after a while.

Re: Good Luck All

Sad to see you go, helped me out so much in my search for, and subsequent setting up issues with my AV gear.

Hope you get things sorted.  Dont worry about the few "firestarters" on here, they annoy the heck out of me too.  But we must rise above them.  This is a good friendly forum full of educated individuals, and usually a nice bit of wit and gentle banter.

Dont stay away too long.
