The past couple of months I've been decorating the little'uns bedroom and hallway. The ma-in-law has employed a decorator from Hungary to do her hallway. He's taken three weeks, which is ludicrous. She thinks she's saving money, when this could be done in 4-5 days. I know because my bro has been a decorator for 30 years.

Because of work commitments I can't spend anymore time sprucing up the rest of the bungalow, she's commited in bringing in this decorator and I ain't happy - she prepared to give work to someone she knows nothing about. This has caused friction between Mrs. P and myself.

Grumpily yours, PP.

RE: Dilemma...

If she is happy about the price and the work then what's the problem?

How is the job priced (for the job, or by the hour/day)?

RE: Dilemma...

Worked out by the day.

The issue is he's taken three weeks to do her hallway, it only takes 4-5 days. She could save herself a few hundred quid based on the same daily rate.

And of course, my bro said he'll do it and give us money towards any new equipment Mrs. P or little'un might need.

Or I'm tempted to say pay me half the amount this bod is receiving and I'll do it...

That's the dilemma. How do I tell her I don't want this unknown lurking around our bungalow?

He's just finishing her hallway. She now wants him to do our living room and main bedroom.

Too many bungalows and hallways!

"Our bungalow"

Which hallway and bungalow are we talking about? Your mother-in-law's bungalow (and hallway) or your's?

Tell her to 'sling her hook' (nicely of course) and that you have your own plans.

Well that's up to her.

And, unless I'm missing something, that's none of her business, so just tell her no thanks you're sorting it out yourselves, if she persists and he turns up, tell him to sling his hook.

Why would a family member want to be paid for doing this sort of work?

And this guy is hardly an 'unknown' or 'stranger', he's known your mum for three weeks!

Btw, big hallway that would take any more than 2 days to do.

Tell him to give a quote for the work, and then get a cheaper one.

She's paying for it, and meets little'un from school once a week. She does do a lot... to say I'm uncomfortable with this arrangement is a gross understatement.

She's met my bro several times and they seem to get on well, but for some reason, she thinks it is a great deal using this other bod. Of course, Mrs. P is siding with her "well it's her choice..." which it is. They're not looking at the bigger picture - and, of course, family loyalty plays a part.

Her lodger is this bod's cousin, so there's an added incentive for her there.

If her sister was a interior designer, let's say, and I employed an outside person to do her house, wonder how she'd feel about that?
