Apple's Tim Cook takes in on the chin re Maps
"The more our customers use our Maps the better it will get and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you."
Perhaps Maps [beta] would have been more appropriate?
Loving the letter. "Use Google Maps instead".

Indeed. And then the process of improving/updating Apple Maps via users' feedback would've merely mirrored Google Maps' genesis, thus no loss of face.
Someone should tattoo "ƧƧIᐴ|" onto Tom Forstall's forehead.
From what I've read elsewhere, the final breaking-point that caused Apple to abandon Google Maps was when Google wouldn't let them have spoken 'turn by turn', a key feature of its maps app on Android. Apparently this left Apple feeling they were 'seriously disadvantaged' with a Google Maps app which was outdated and 'crippled' compare to its Android equivalent. Without knowing all the facts it's difficult to know what apple could have done better. But it's clear to see that the embarrasment of Apple Maps, and the subsequent apology, hasn't done them any favours either.
Oh how the champagne-corks must be popping all over the place at the Googleplex.
Apple will try to make things work then scrap and restart again and learn from there mistakes
