My iPad is a Ventriloquist!!

Whenever I have new email, the alert on my iPad sounds as if it's somewhere else! Most times, I have the iPad on the table near my side of the bed. But the alert sound comes from my wife's bedside table! I often mistake it for a message on her iPhone, but no! It's my iPad!!

Anyone else experienced this?  puzzled

I get that, my iPhone is quite directional, but the iPad (1) gives me no clue to its location.
