strange substance

I have repeatedly noticed a strange substance that likes to stick to the chrome caps on my soundstyle xs105 rack. I have cleaned it off a few times but it keeps coming back and I can see nowhere it could have come from. Its a sort of sticky stuff that dulls the surface, rubs off with some effort.
