RE: Home cinema

As a relative newbie on this forum, just wanted to say thanks to What Hifi and its regular and irregular posters for the site and forum, which has helped me make some important buying decisions over the past few months.
Ok, I've had to disable rich-text to see what I'm writing now, but each decision made with the help of the forum has considerably increased my listening and viewing pleasure. Hats off to you, and for putting the effort and investment of time and money into making the whole site such a goldmine of product info and opinions. Thanks!

ps. Just had to buy a new shower enclosure for the bathroom - nightmare!! Big investment, they all look the same, and no "dealers" stock any demo models!! And couldn't find a "WhatShower.com" forum on the interweb. (If anyone interested, eventually went for a Twyford Hydr8, because wife liked the shape of the handles; but detecting some sybillance:-)

it would be nice if the old smileys were back. and being able to put one of them in a thread heading again would be good.

I too miss the old smileys Crying

Though the amusing differences between the website when viewed here at work and at home do give some light relief - I'm still seeing "Il Cattivo" instead of Albert for max!

As a recent joiner of the forum, I concur.  There are some people on these forums who are obviously very knowledgable but seem to take joy in snide / sarcastic replies.  It may be that there is a history between certain posters but it doesn't lead to a very welcoming atmosphere.  Some of the rules seem a little Draconian to me.

Compared to another forum I frequent (motorbikes), there is a lot less friendly help and advice here (tho most of the users on the bike forum are hobbyists who have a passion that they want to share).  Having said that, I've had a few replies to some of my posts that have been informed and very useful to me, for which I'm very grateful.

As for the new forum software, it seems ok to me - certainly doesn't put me off visiting.

I joined a motorbike chat forum and found it to be the most flame ridden, abusive, sick site I have ever encountered. I wish I had sepnt more time reading the forum before I joined. Individual maker forums do seem to be much better.

The site goes through lively and lean periods and out of the top 10 most posts (excluding WHF staff), there is only JoelSim that I can think of, who is not posting. I have gone a few weeks with hardly any posts as well.

I found that the idle chit-chat sections are as you found (which didn't entirely surprise me), so I avoid them; the sections about bikes, engines, maintenance, help etc (more comparable to this forum) were very different - people offering to drive for an hour to come to my house to help me fix an issue (which to them was trivially easy, but for someone who is not confident doing such things (i.e. me), it was a big stress).

Who's Thegelman - as in Superman, Batman et al?? What the duce is a 'Thegel'? [insert 'confused' smiley - ie :S - here]

FWIW, me likey new site, especially its newfound compatibility with Safari, and the fact that it's so bright, and clean 'n' shiny Smile

Need 'thumbs up' and 'confused' smileys, please Wink  Actually, in hindsight, not keen on the 'winking' smiley - looks too much like a village idiot who's been blinded in one eye Surprised

RE: Home cinema

I'm a computer/tech luddite and I've hardly noticed the changes. Apart from re-setting my "favourites" menu, the forums and site look fine. Yes, posting took a second or two longer to work than before, but so what?

The retailer's make it, at the very least, a more pluralistic place to visit, and as long as their sigs inform us of their day jobs (which they generally do), I haven't got a problem with that.

I don't know if I'm classed as a regular poster, but my recent absence has been due to a ghastly bout of "gastric flu". Things were so bad I couldn't drink tea or listen to music for four days. Little ones had a blast of it too. Now all passed, thankfully.

The site lives on and on.

RE: Home cinema

So gel, would you like a return of the old "Forum ranking" then?  Maybe updated, like some other forums do, with acronyms for the different ranks...  Suggestions welcome Wink

Golly, why is everyone so obsessed with how many posts they've made? Just to be clear, there is no plan to introduce any form of ranking or seniority – the old forum ranking was just a default feature of the software we were using at the time, and served no useful purpose.
