About the site
Welcome to the What Hi-fi? Sound and Vision Forums, your essential destination for discussion, advice and information about all things home entertainment.
We aim to offer friendly, lively Forums where members can share opinions as well as knowledge and experiences. To keep things fun and fair for everyone, we ask you all to read - and expect you to abide by - the following rules.
We thought we’d let you in on a little secret: we’ve been busy developing a shopping site for whathifi.com, and we’re now ready to release the beta version for testing.
We’re only releasing this to our Forum users at this stage as part of the development process. We’d like to invite you, our most regular users, to take part, posting any feedback on this Forum thread so we can pass it back to the developers.
After some investigation (and going through the upgrade process from 7 to 8 to 9 on my own machine), we have identified an issue for users in Internet Exporer 8 and 9 versions when replying to forum threads, where typed text does not display in the rich text editor (though it is actually recorded and will show, albeit with all those spelling mistakes intact) when you save the post.
This can be resolved by switching to 'compatibility mode' in IE. The instructions for doing so can be found here:
The operation of the Forums is pretty much as you've all been used to, and we've tried to keep the look and feel as close to the old one as possible.
If you haven’t yet logged in, you’ll find you need to do so with your USERNAME and password, not your email address as previously.
But there are a few new things to learn:
1) Avatar uploads should now work for everyone!
- To upload your avatar, go to your 'My account' page, click 'Edit' and scroll down to the section labelled 'Picture'.
I always have a quick look through what-hifi when I turn on the computer, part of my morning routine.
And I realise it's a commercial enterprise and I'm not paying (although I do buy the mag)...
But I'm getting pretty fed-up of the Acer girl popping up in my face every time I open a new page! It isn't going to make me buy Acer, it's going to make me associate Acer with Annoying. and Advertising.
Vent over...that feels better...
For the last two or three days I've been trying to change the avatar and only now the old one is starting to go a funny shape. I know from past issues the cacheing but gawd is there no-way of speeding the darn thing up?
(And I can only do it on Google Chrome)
Suddenly, we have been spammed from all directions.
Or is it phishing?
[NOTE from MODS - Spam, but normal service has resumed ]
When you've got a spare moment, can we have have a news story listing the Top 10 Top 10s of 2013 for Black Friday Christmas 2013?
What is it with you people? Once we used to have genuinely interesting news and analysis and stuff in the news channel, now we just seem to have endless lists of stuff already on the site which in turn links to other stuff on the site, which links to – well, you get the idea. Well, that and unashamed puff-pieces for products.
I apologise if this is a well trodden path, but I'm very confused at the review system.
WHF says 'Every product is rated out of five stars on a performance-per-pound basis.'
And a CD player which costs THIRTY SIX THOUSAND POUNDS gets 5 stars. EDITED WHF? You even site three negatives in the review but it still gets 5 stars? Perhaps there should be a review section for 'if money were no object'?
Seriously at $140, it would relieve so many problems here.
