Just an idea...
Bare with me here..... I recently had my stereo system in my car upgraded. Bought a new top spec Alpine cd player which has the Audyssey multi eq xt, and 2 new amps. Amps are JL Audio 2x150W rms driving front Infinity components and a 1x250 Wrms Alpine class D amp driving infinity perfect 12" sub. The rear parcel shelf speakers are factory fit jbl's run off the headunit.
My new headunit developed a fault, so I had to take it back to get the headunit replaced and get it setup on their laptop using the 4 mics they position in the car for setup.
Anyway while I was dropping my car off I ended up listining to a customers car that was going through the final tweaking stage. The owner had the new JL Audio W7 12" sub and the shop asked if I had heard it yet. He just smiled and said im going to let the installer give you a demo. Now baring in mind that the sub is around £700 by itself with no box. I was expecting it to be pretty good. Especially as he had 4 very expensive JBL signature series amps. 2 of the amps in mono config driving each door seperately, 1x500W rms for these 2. Another in stereo driving rear speakers. And a 1000Wrms driving that sub.
Needless to say it was bloody impressive. The speed and dynamics are unbelievable, crystal clear and that sub was extremely musical. Goes from punchy to unbelievabley deep bass in an instant. Absolutely incredible. It doesn't matter what you play or at what volume that system just didn't care. The scale was incredible, so much energy when needed and the acoustic vocal cd he had playing. My god.... all the hairs on the back of my neck tingled. So much emotion in the vocals.
I found out afterwards how much the system cost, and well lets just say that they had spent 2 full days setting it all up and they wern't finished yet. Oh and around 10k if I wanted somthing similar. He had monitors in the back,dvd/sat nav up front and some special 8 input fully adjustable box of tricks that can be tweaked from the touch screen. The shop said the guys a hifi nut, I would imagine so with that sort of budget spent on a car system.
The instaler was saying that he used certain cd's to test the system during final tweaking. One of these was an acoustic album from Tori Amos. Another track on adifferent cd started off all quiet and acoustic, really mellow and laid back. And then it slowly built up into this incredibly energetic vocal with the most insane bass I have ever heard. So controlled and tight, but goes to insanely low bass in an instant. So much energy all the hairs on my neck where tingiling.Just incredible.
Anyway to my idea (at last) ...... Have you ever thought about making a demo/test cd that could be used not only to test your own home system but also to help in testing out new equipment in shops. As you have probably tested more systems than I've had hot dinners, I think you could put together the Ultimate guide to testing cd. Various acoustic, vocal, rythm, bassy tracks etc. All the essential songs to really test a system out.
Also you could say what to listen out for on certain tracks, certain instruments for example in a really crowded mix. Im probably not explaining myself very well but you get the idea.
