As the new look forum will be here soon......
I think we should tell Editors what we would like the new forum to have.
I would start off first but I wouldn't so who is the brave man.....Mr. Duncan?
Threaded view. cf www.dpreview.com, which I think has a very good forum navigation paradigm.
And
formatting
obviously
Agreed! Trying to get that fixed. If it's any consolation, we lose formatting at this end just as often as other users. Trying to get our Digital Media team to sort it out.
while your at it the odd Smilie could be good aswell
PM system? may be??
So I can have a private conversation with Simon Lucus ![]()
This do?!
it only seems that some special people have access to them
and im not doing that much code.

I would be really cool if there was instant messaging. Would give the forum a considerably more interactive feel. Even the ability to give someone also online a "nudge" to look at your thread would be good. However, I suspect that certain posters might get more nudges than they would like.
I think the number of viewings on a thread should be made to work. Some posters get frustrated cos they don't get any replies. With the number of viewings recorded a least they'd know that people had been looking.
And yes, the formatting is woeful. I have to place in my own html to format the text and do not have access to things like picture uploading, links, etc.
The email alerting doesn't appear to work either (for me at least)
How about allowing posters to upload video, a la uTube? Would need a lot of server space.
More sophisticated searching
How about allowing the posters the opportunity to rate items which have been rated by the mag? So each item would have a WHFSV rating and user rating. You could also allow users to vote for which items they thought were best within a category eg In-wall speakers (lol). Many sites do this sort of thing (I would post some but am not sure it is allowed).
We will indeed have user reviews on the new-look site. And some interesting video plans, too...
Other ideas might be to include reviews of the media. It would be cool if users themselves could add say a cd into a particular genre and then allow users to vote on it (a bit like I have been listening to....). This would bring the site more inline with Web 2.0.
I notice that the current site has been implemented using .NET. I might be worth complementing this with AJAX to improve site performance (given all the extra users you will be getting) and provide a swisher user experience.

Not so sure. Maybe that's why I haven't been called for interview (yet) ![]()

The page extension .aspx so the current implementation is definately .NET. Do you suspect that other technologies may be used to implement the new site?
No, I just mean I'm not a huge fan of AJAX - more trouble than it's worth, IMO ![]()

formatting that does actually work would be a start
It really does get a bit of a pain having to add
each time you want a new line.
Thats it.
