Do any members own the above amplifier if so what do they think of it and what kit do they use it with?
Must be some owners
Clearly not http://www.whathifi.com/forum/hi-fi/arcam-fmj-a19-vs-arcam-fmj-a28
If I could help I would. Not heard the A28 or A19. Why have you targeted the A28. And can you not audition or purchase from a company with a returns policy?
Amp; CDP; Turntable; Tuner; Speakers
I have heard the A19 a bit too refined for my taste.
I think he is asking about the A28 because is has been reduced in price so is now about the same as the A19. I don't think Arcam amps are that popular lately around here. I would look at some others like Creek, Roksan Kandy, Marantz Pearl Lite etc.
I have an A28 and really rate it - I actually prefer it to the A19 as it sounds more powerful with better dynamics, massive soundstage and great bass depth. I did reply to your thread from yesterday...
I love it with my Kef R100 speakers and think they work really well together.
Sonos, Leema, Inspire Hifi, Arcam, Kef

Why's that so?
Note to the OP...
What gear are you thinking of partnering it with or do you already have source and speakers?
I used to use an Arcam CD17 and thought it was great until I heard the Leema Dac - it really opened things up, added more sparkle and excitement. Mind you, the dac itself was the best part of a grand and you can pick up a CD17 for 300 quid!
Am thinking of using the A19 with Monitor Audio RX6 and Audiolab 8200CD which I own. Have heard it and like it but just wonder if the A28 would be a better bet especially as it has become cheaper.

Both would work well with the rx6 but I would personally opt for the extra power of the a28 as I like to listen at fairly high volumes. Not sure the difference in sq as I've not heard them but I would imagine the a28 would probably have the edge.
Not heard the speakers I'm afraid but the CDP will be a good match for the smooth Arcam.
I heard the A19 with Kef LS50 speakers and I really didn't think it had the power to make the most of them at all. The A28 has another 25 watts of power per channel which means more grip over dynamics and the ability to drive speakers with conviction.
What amp are you replacing?
PM Brown (above) -- Where can you pick up a CD17 for 300 quid??
Someone on here mentioned that Richer Sounds are doing them cheap
Sorry, my mistake. The thread I read on here referred to the A18 amp. Sorry for any confusion!
@ Lo Fi
Whatever amp you decide to choose, can't really see you being disappointed.
If you have heard them and are happy go for it, I would go for more power so A28. But I would also try other amps like the RK K2 which you can get for about £650 now and the new Creek 50A which I thought was better than the A19 and the Marantz Pearl Lite againd reduced to about £670. If you play at low volumes then the 50W amps should be fine.
Are you prepared to secondhand, if so there is a nice looking Creek Evo 2 on Ebay at present. They tend to go for anywhere between £250-300 normally. Thats a lovely amp for the money.
Creek 5350 amp, Creek Evo 2 CDP, SBT, Beresford Caiman Mk I DAC, Epos Elan 30, Pro-Ject 2Xperience Acryl with 2M Blue, various Van Damme & Mark Grant cables
