NEWS: Cowon’s D2 MP3 player is a right touch

CowonThe iPod Touch was a fantastic advert for touchscreen technology. We couldn’t resist a good grope every time one was in the office.

Let’s hope the new, 16GB version of Cowon’s D2 MP3 player can have a similar effect.

It features a 2.5in QVGQ touchscreen and is compatible with MP3, OGG, WMA, ASF, FLAC and WAV audio files, not to mention MPEG-4 video files.

There’s a built-in FM tuner, TV output and line input for voice recording.

And, with a claimed 52hours battery life it contains almost as much juice as a Del Monte fruit factory.

As well as the 16GB version (£160), the D2 is also available in 4GB (£100) and 8GB capacities, but the integrated SDHC memory card slot means you can potentially expand this to 32GB.

does the 16gb version also have a SDHC slot? doesnt really make it clear whether it does or not.

It does. I am a user of the 4GB version, and the 16gb version is pretty much the same except that it has more memory. It can also be bought with DAB radio in the UK with the 4gb and 8gb versions - I'm not sure that the 16gb version has DAB yet.

why such low capacity?

16GB isn't low capacity, not for player with flash memory. High capacity players like the Ipod classic use hard drives which are bigger and heavier and more breakable, but have more capacity. Most new players coming out now use flash memory which has lower capacity, but is smaller and more durable. Size is so important to most people, hence the use of flash memory.  I think there's a Creative Zen player which has 32gb of flash memory, but that's the biggest one as far as I know.

......and the ipod Touch. With sensible management you don't need to store all your song titles/videos on your MP3 player unless you are likely to be cut off from civilation (or holed up in the Big Brother house) for a few months.
