Best of the Week - 23/05/08

Historically, 23rd May hasn't been a great day to be a criminal or dissident. On this day in 1701, the notorious pirate Captain Kidd was hanged at Execution Dock, Wapping, London. His body was then hung in chains from a gibbet on the shore in Tilbury for three days as a warning to passing mariners.
Today in 1934, the Texas Rangers ambushed and killed Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, and today in 1430 Joan of Arc was captured and handed over to the English.
Oh, and in 1498 Girolamo Savonarola, the dictator of Florence, was simultaneously hanged and burnt. Which is nothing if not thorough.
