The Z7 was tested in our February 2009 issue, but it's exactly the same review as the one on this website.

Firmware upgrade now online - details here:

FYI, there's a firmware upgrade due for the amp in early February. Details here:

How can internet radio not suit everyone?! Over 3,000 stations! There must be something they'll like.....    :D

At £1495 this is one box nirvana when it comes to perfromance per pound.

Would like to see how this stacks up against the pioneer sc lx81

Can someone explain the power ratings on amps. I'm deciding between the Yamaha and the SC-LX81. It's stated in the RX-V3900 review that the later is the more powerful amp? Looking at the specs on each, the pioneer rates its 190W/channel at 6ohms whereas the Yamaha rates its 140W/channel at 8ohms. Running at 6ohms I'd expect the Yamaha should put out closer to 170W/channel.... although appears to be under the LX81's channel output this does not tell the whole story.

The LX81 states in its instruction manual:-

Multi channel simultaneous power output (1 kHz, 1 %, 8 Ω) 7ch total = 700 W

Rated Power Output – Stereo (20 Hz to 20 kHz), 0.09 %, 8 Ω) 140 W + 140 W

The Yamaha states:-

20 Hz to 20 kHz, 0.04% THD, 8 Ω 140W RMS min for each of its 7 channels which would equal at total of 980 W.... some 180W above the Pioneers total power output with 0.05% less distortion throughout the same audible frequency range!

I guess what I'm asking is how can the Yamaha amp have less power per channel and yet have more total power than the Pioneer?

Am I interpreting these figures correctly? If so, you'd think on paper that the Yamaha DSP-Z7/RX-V3900 would have it all over the Pioneer SC-LX81 in both power and clarity.

Andy,

In your opinion is the Yamaha DSP-Z7 is worth the money over my old amp

Dr Kay,

Can you tell me the type of speakers that were used during the audition of the pioneer amp

I currently have a RVX 2400 yamaha reciever, is there a distinct difference in sound quality of the new Yamaha DSP-Z7 over my old amp ?

What issue you did carry out the test for the yamaha amp DSP-Z7 and can i get hold of a copy?

I had a listen between the yamaha z7 and the pioneer sc-lx82 and all i can say is that the pioneer blew it away with clarity, depth of soundstage, the shear scale is unbelevable, control e.t.c. everything just sounded so much better on the pioneer, so therefore you guessed it i bought the pioneer and i am very, very happy that i did.

DR KAY
