Got myself one of these the other day. Good points are: Quick operation, very impressive picture quality with a good DVD,(I use on colour setting which gives sharp+slight colour enhance) Sound pretty dynamic but a little OTT in the bass region. Remote control very responsive (makes a change)No juddering or motion problems, nice light up TOSHIBA LOGO, The not so good are: DIVX Playback very soft focus, & no way of adjustments in picture settings, MP3 and CD Playback average, strangely it does make a slight whine from the psu when in standby but it's not audible from a few feet away, Don't like the half depth size, looks cheap. The Oppo DV980-H player is superior in every way but you try getting one and they are too damn expensive; might as well get a cambridge DVD99 or Panasonic DMP-BD35 bluray for not much more cash than the Oppo and quality build to boot. For under £100 the Tosh still does the biz in the viewing experience and that's all that matters.
Bought one of these players a few weeks back and let me tell you the 1080p picture through my projector would blow your socks off .There is no way i am going to spend a few grand to replace all my dvd`s with BD when this player is so good do yourself a favour buy one its well good
After looking at Blu Ray players I came across this beauty. After reading all the reviews I made my mind up that this was the machine for me, the price of £59.99 in the sale also convinced me but I would also paid the full price if needed. Having a 37" Toshiba Regza TV I knew I couldn't go wrong. The picture quality using the XDE technology blew me away. The ease of use of this machine was also a plus. Okay the design could of been better but hey if the technology inside produces the results on screen that it does I'm prepared to compromise. All in all its a great machine that saves me from replacing my vast DVD collection and if I did want to watch a Blu Ray disc I'll use my PS3.
The picture quality is impressive but the build quality is poor. It feels almost like a £30 Asda special also the PSU whines when it's off and the unit vibrates while playing a DVD. It's also lacking features such as remembering the point you were in the film when you turn it off. The screen is just a few seven segment green LEDs. For £100 I expected more.
However the picture is the best I've seen from a DVD player.

The specs listed here say the XD-E500 doesn't play DVD+R/+RW discs, but Toshiba's own website says it does. Which is right?
