But dont understand why you put this 'fab' machine just after the Apple??? Looking very biased towards Apple!!! It's worldwide well known that Sony portables sound much better and lovable that anything ever made from Apple (and build quality?) In my opinion Apple Ipod line is good as storage devices and able to reproduce good sound via docks, but as music portable which you suppose to listen on the way it's far behind Sony. Apple sound lifeless, slightly over processed and almost never thruthful. When i listen one of my Sony players i hear music ,it's vibe and colour, i've got involved, and i want more... When i listen to Apple I Pod's line (i did a lot) i've got very quickly tired from that harshness of high and 'high quality digitalism' of those machines. So i dont understand how come that world known Hi-Fi magazine give such a biased reviews (a bit unprofessional huh?). So, please dont hate those products you testing without a reason just try it!
What exactly you ment with prerecorded material? How did you manage to squeeze CD inside? or you used LP or Tapes? MD or UMD? just tell me how?
If you ment that ITUNES/Amazone content, which i'm not buying cause of very bad quality it has (always ripping the CD's or buying Wav) then your review was a nonsence! ITunes made for ipods and not suppose to provide any good quality to 3d party music players, specially rival Sony, and that's kind a obvious! More over all this 'Jazz' based on native Sony 'PCM' (digital audio) technology which was widely licenced also to Apple and i dare to say that ATRAC acoustic code is far more listenable than any AAC/MP3. I'm a music lover and i dont need all those gimmicks and widest screens...(actually shake to shuffle - invented and brought to the market by Sony in the end of 2005) There is still to much to say, but i'm not working here, so going to preserve my time In one sentance... if you want to have quality of portable sound go to Sony shop - Simply because it's never Wrong
I've been trying to choose between the Sony and the Nano, and have therefore read a lot of reviews...probably too many!
I have to say that I'm utterly shocked that you say any ipod sounds better than the Sony, this is the ONLY review I have read that says this. Every other review pretty much says the Sony sounds amazing in comparison to the Nano.
It is the better sound quality that allows it to try to compete with the Ipod, because it certainly isn't the appearance, or extra features, or range of accessories. Lets face it, the Nano wins hands down on all these other parameters.
Maybe you are right, but I haven't seen another review that agrees.

One more thing.
