Philips AJ5100
For
It’s got the looks
Against
It’s got too much bass
The AJ5100 is designed as a ‘table radio', but with its literally laid-back styling both looks and feels more exclusive than it is. Stereo speakers and mains or battery operation both add to this favourable impression.
Reception is clean and secure on both DAB or FM, and the Philips produces a broad sound. It's far too pleased with its bass-reflex system, though, heating up the midrange and low frequencies to sauna levels. However, that makes the AJ5100 better that than the impoverished bass we hear so often, even if it's not without competition at this price-level.
