As we said in the July issue of the magazine, while it remains an excellent premium TV, the 46PFL9704 is no longer the best in class now that we've put it up against some of its newer (and better) rivals. Hence the drop to 4 stars.
The 40PFL9704 stays at 5 stars because it won the May 2010 Supertest against all its key rivals. You can't always assume that different screen sizes within the same range will always perform the same.
Re the new Philips sets, we're not expecting them to be released for another couple of months, so won't be able to review them until the autumn.
Andy, re the 46pfl9704, I am happy to accept that in this rapidly changing market, brands improve and surpass each other within the space of months; good for us consumers in the end. Having said so, any television described by your expert crowd as "still superb" appears to be hard done by in losing a star.
Incidentally, and even considering that there are now TVs with (even) better blacks differentiation and motion handling, would you think I'd be badly advised in picking up this baby for 1600 Euros, now that I can?
In the June 2010 edition of the magazine this TV received 5 stars and I see the 40" model still retains its five stars in the magazine and in this list. Very confusing. On another note, Philips have announced 3D kits for their 9000 and 8000 models. Can you guys at What Hi-Fi S&V shed any more light on this? I’m considering one of these sets, but at the money would probably not buy without 3D being available as I can't afford another £2,200 two years down the line.
