The '9604 is one of the best 32in sets we've seen this year, but it doesn't push performance to a level that can justify its price

Philips TVs do generally need more fine-tuning than some rivals to get the best picture quality.

I bought one 2 weeks ago because my old matchline tube gave up.

At first I looked at the 8000 series model which is alot cheaper. Finally I selected the 32pfl9604 because it was on stock and I did not want to wait.

Compared to my old tube I find that the screen is too dark. After trying all fancy settings I ended up disabling the lightsensor (because it dims the screen), set contrast at 100% and backlight to 70% to get enough light. At these settings I get a reasonable quality but black looks already grey at these settings. A rather dissapointing performance for what is supposed to be a top model.

it did take me some tweeking, reds looked a tad orange, but once it was all set up it was a great picture, and the sound quality from the inbuilt 4 speakers was great, quite possibly the best i'd heard from a flat screen set of its size.

The ambilight was a great feature, i felt it was reducing my eye strain watching tv in a dark room, and the lounge mode proved great when i was sat simply reading a book in the evening.
