The TX-SR807 continues Onkyo's de-contenting of the 800 Series. This pattern began with the TX-SR806 which weighed approximately 15 pounds less than the TX-SR805. All of this loss was in the amplifier section.
The TX-SR805 is a classic. THX Ultra 2 Certification, Audyssey MultEQ XT (806 and 807 have the less powerful MultEQ), Top spec Burr Brown DAC's (806 and 807 use Crystal Semiconductor DAC's with lower S/N), shared the identical amplifier section with the TX-SR875, and was manufactured in Japan. (now all Onkyo's are made in Malaysia)
While the TX-SR807 is competitive with other AVR's in its price range, no longer is it THX Ultra2 like the 805 was. The TX-SR806, which shares a similar amp section with the 807 somehow got Ultra2 Certification, but many wonder if Onkyo pulled the wool over THX's eyes and did not disclose the changes to the amplifier section.
The successors to the TX-SR805 are simply not in the same league in regards to drive capability. And the use of lessor DAC's and less powerful implementation of Audyssey's award winning Room Correction is a disappointment. If given a choice, I would still rather have an 805 over the newer 806 and 807. The TX-SR876 and TX-SR906 are still excellent and have not been de-contented. The only thing I do not like about these is they are no longer manufactured in Japan.
