Harman-Kardon AVR-355

The AVR 355 sounds capable in isolation, but it's found wanting when compared to the very best around this price point

The Harman Kardon certainly was correctly set up - remember, we do this all the time. We use automatic set-up (where available) and then tweak with a sound pressure-level meter. All modes and menus are checked.

And to stress, the Harman Kardon isn't a poor product - it just underperforms against incredibly strong competition at this price.

Care to comment who this 'fairly reliable source' is who knows so much about our testing procedures?

The HK auto setup results in a very flat, dull, and lifeless EQ curve.  Adjusting things manually after fact does not remove the curve.  If you reset the unit and set it up manually from the start, you'll find the HK stomps on the competition.

I heard from a fairly reliable source that the H-K wasn't correctly configured during the testing... Something along the lines of it was incorrectly setup, thus not letting the amp show what it could do.

Any ideas about what this could be referring to, and, if it would have changed the review had it been correctly setup?

I was suprised to hear what the source said, hence why I asked it here - get it from the horses mouth (so to speak).

I'd rather not say who the source is, especially on the public part of the website.

I'm just pleased to hear that my trust in What Hifi hasn't been misplaced; and I'll continue to trust them as I always have.

I hope you didn't use EzSet EQ auto setup! Because it's EQ result is catastrophic - it sounds like small portable radio. Please say that you turned off the Ez Set's EQ. If you didn't, then I'm not surprised why it got only 3 stars...

Otherwise, for me, this is still most pleasant, warm & full sounding receiver for the money. Way better than harsh and cold sounding Onkyo's and Yamahas.

Yes, I think H-K's styling is great and distinctive!

Why is it that physical beauty and top sound quality are so seldom found in the same product?

I appreciate that this is an old post, but if anyone is listening I have a question.

I am currently looking for an upgrade from a Yamaha RXV 520 and am currently considering the Yamaha RXV 765 and this HK unit as they are currently on sale at a popular HiFi retailer for a imilar price.

While it may be comparing chalk to cheese, which would be the best option?  I need to have 2 component inputs (XBOX 360 and Wii) and at least 2 HDMI inputs currently although I expect it will eventually be three or four.

I have in the past owned 2 Yamahas and loved them, but I do like the HK kit and it looks fantastic but how do these units compare, anyone have any suggestions?
