Not a runaway victor, but this preamp does what it does with panache

Thrillingly fast, detailed and expressive sound; oddball looks

Low end might be too lean for some

We tested the Pre VS2 preamp as part of a three-box Cyrus system, comprising the Pre vs2 preamp, the PSX-R off-board power supply, plus the 8 Power amp – £1700 all together.

Joining them together is straightforward: the PSX-R's hard-wired umbilical connects to the Pre vs2, which in turn joins the 8 Power using phono connections. Connect a source to the preamp and speakers to the power amp, and you're ready.

Fire up a testing tune like Joan As Police Woman's Flushed Chest, and the Cyrus threesome impresses immediately. We suspected the sound would be speedy, well-resolved and easy to follow, and it is – the Cyrus combo is as happy to dish the details as an over-the-back-fence gossip.

Clear, beautiful midrange
Our previous experience of two-thirds of this set-up primed us for a clear, well-ordered presentation with pace and drive to spare - and that's just what's delivered. Want to know exactly how grimy that analogue Moog sounds? This system tells you more than any rival.

The combination of rock-solid, taut, well-modulated low frequencies and dynamic fleet-footedness is thrilling. Add in a plausible soundstage, fanatical attention to transients and a beautifully neutral midrange, and you've an endlessly entertaining pre/power combo.
