Sky promises 3D Premier League football for 'mid 2010'

Sky 3D TV
3D footie is coming to Sky TV

It's already promised us 3D broadcasts from 2010 and now Sky's just scored a major victory by announcing that football will be getting the 3D treatment – possibly in time for the end of this season.

Right now all it's saying is 'mid 2010' – but that's close enough for us to start rearranging the living room in anticipation of Rooney's boots flying out the screen.

The 3D trickery will be achieved with two HD cameras that'll tackle the wide shots of the game. Close-ups will be handled by lowly 2D cams, lest a stray slide-tackle make you spill your Carlsberg, but the picture will be 'dropped back' in the 3D field to maintain some illusion of depth.

If you're a Sky HD customer then you've already got half the kit you need because the box and dish won't change.

Sadly, your 1080p plasma will have to be subbed for the bedroom telly and a new 3D compatible TV wheeled-in in its place, because the screen requires a whole new level of technology.

Oh, and you'll need some of those natty polarised specs as well - and possibly a sick bag. The price you pay for being an early adopter.

As it says in the story E9 Smooth, you won't need a new Sky HD box.

So thats £10 for the HD channels.

And I guess another £10-£15 for the 3D channels.

And I bet I need a new Sky Plus HD 3D Box too!!!

in the current climate (financial)can these behemoth companys not stick with what their trying to sell ie:BLU-RAY which they embraced over hd-dvd.You get the impression the did'nt make enough, fast enough! Now try and bury the singular b.ray format and introduce HD-3D,So your new shiny £1500 tv & £500 bd player is possibly useless for this HD-BD-3DTV or whatever.lets hope they at least stick with the audio side of things,so you can hold on to some of your new kit?or do they want to introduce 3D AUDIO too?(joke).Bad times ahead unless money is no object,me-thinks!

the_lhc - it's an additional option.

I can see it now...

So is this instead of or as well as the HD channels? I like HD but I'm not interested in 3D at the moment, am I going to find the football unwatchable if I don't have a 3DTV?

Next Spring, I'd expect. We'll be at the Consumer Electronics Show first thing in January, when the big manufacturers traditionally unveil all their plans for the year ahead, with products to follow February/March onwards

So when are the 3D TV's out?!
