If you're a frequenter of whathifi.com, you'll know we've spent the past week bringing you the details on Sony's new range of receivers for 2008. One of them has been causing quite a stir, the STR-DG820, as it offers decoding of all the new high-definition audio formats for £300.
But technical specs are only half the story. Naturally, what you really want to know is how good it is. Now we could have published the review in the next issue of What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision, but then you'd have had to wait.
So we promised you an exclusive online review, and here it is!

That is one ugly receiver.
Thanks for the quick and nice review.
2 Questions:
-earlier I read ' ..upconversion to HDMI but no video upscaling...'. Now you write 'nor can it upconvert'. Does this mean that it needs use more than one cable to connect to a tv (I use next to HDMI also component inputs)
-Does it have lip-sync capability?
Hi,
Does it have lip-sync capability?
This may be an important omission if not as it's one of the main 'gripes' on the forums.
Seems a great budget receiver - possibly wait until the 'ES' is released to prize me away from my current Yamaha though.
Cheers,
Cofnchtr.
ecellent news....time to order one perhaps
Wow, really good review. Can't wait what you hear to say about the 2400ES; if it's as good as this review with all the extras you mention, it's a sure-fire purchase for me
