Disney's Snow White: dancing onto Blu-ray
Coming to Blu-ray on November 2 is Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the world's first animated feature film. And the release will mark another first for Disney – it'll be the first UK title to be available as a Blu-ray ahead of the DVD release.

The film will intially be released as a Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack, but those only wanting the DVD will have to wait another week to buy it. And as you might expect for the first of Disney's new Diamond Edition series, the Blu-ray comes loaded with extras.

Viewers will be able to go on a virtual tour of Hyperion Studios, where the film was made, and even see archive drawings and pictures, plus rare footage of Walt Disney.

The Magic Mirror guides the viewer through the movie with extra content, even recognising viewing patterns to suggest what to look at next, while DisneyView sees Disney artist Toby Bluth extending the image beyond the conventional 4:3 frame to 'fill the otherwise dark edges of the screen with beautiful custom imagery'.

Other features include an audio commentary with Walt Disney, a variety of documentaries and of course the inevitable Heigh-Ho karaoke singalong.

The DVD can be more easily ripped to a PC/laptop/Mac and transferred to portable devices for viewing.

As Tom says, being able to give the kids the DVD to watch whenever they want to view a film away from the main TV is brilliant and the BD is kept safe.

And of course those who don't want the BD can hold off a week and buy the DVD-only release.

Disney is doing this with their animation releases.  I think an excellent idea.  This is because many people who might buy this for their kids enjoyment might have an old tv and a dvd player in the kids' playroom/area and also might have one of them car DVD players, and this way when you buy it on Blu-ray you don't need to also buy the DVD to play it on these other child friendly systems.  Again I think it's a great idea, try explaining to your three year old that he can't watch Pinocchio on the TV in the playroom because mummy and daddy are watching something in the living room and the Blu-ray disc won't play in their DVD player.

Can someone explain the thinking behind a blu-ray / DVD combo pack? People who have a blu-ray player won't be interested in the DVD, and people who want the DVD won't want to shell out for the blu-ray... confused.
